Abstract

1,154,335. Recovering waste gas from converters. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd., and YOKOYAMA ENG. CO. Ltd. 25 July, 1966 [24 July, 1965], No. 33343/66. Heading F4B. In a top-blown converter, the generated waste gas is sent to a gas holder 14 or a stack 15 through a hood 4, a cooling device 6 and a conduit 19, under the action of a suction blower 12 and valve means 8 and 13; said hood being provided with a vertically movable skirt 3 for shielding the top portion of the converter and several air vent pipes 5 each having an end open to the atmosphere, said pipes 5 absorbing pulsating fluorinations in pressure inherent in the steel making reaction in the converter. Inert gas e.g. nitrogen or carbonic acid gas can be introduced into the vent pipes 5 through subsidiary pipes (see Fig. 3, not shown), to prevent the possibility of explosion in the pipe. A back draught damper (18, Fig. 3) can also be incorporated within the pipes 5.
