Abstract
1,154,226. Aminonitriles. STANDARD OIL CO. 1 Sept., 1966 [29 Nov., 1965], No. 39134/66. Heading C2C. Aminoacetonitriles are obtained by (i) reacting in an acidic environment (A) ammonia or a mono- or polyprimary or secondary amine containing 1-20 carbon atoms in the form of its salt with a strong protic acid; (B) formaldehyde, and (C) hydrogen cyanide, under autogenous pressure at 40-120‹ C., (ii) cooling at least a part of the reaction mixture resulting from stage (i) to a temperature below 40‹ C. and separating the aminoacetonitrile from the mother liquor, (iii) replenishing the mother liquor from stage (ii) with reactants substantially in the same molar proportions as they were consumed in forming the aminonitrile, and (iv) recycling the replenished mother liquor from stage (iii) back to stage (i). In the examples nitrilotriacetonitrile, ethylamine diacetonitrile and ethylenediamine tetraacetonitrile are prepared and the latter is converted to the tetrasodium salt of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid.
