Abstract

1,153,523. Proportional-letter-spacing escapement device. OLYMPIA WERKE A.G. 25 May, 1966 [1 June, 1965], No. 23284/66. Heading B6F. A proportional letter-spacing escapement device for a typewriter carriage (not shown), having attached thereto an escapement rack 1, Fig. 2, whose teeth 3<SP>111</SP>, 3<SP>11</SP>, 31 are subdivided into three letter-spacing units e (Fig. 3a), is provided with three pawls 4 1 , 4 2 , 4 3 each of which is associated with a respective pair of release members 11, 11a, actuated selectively by one or more of bails 22 . . . 26, to pivot one or more of the pawls 4 1 ... , out of engagement with the escapement rack teeth 3<SP>1</SP> ... , and cause the carriage to move in the letter-spacing direction 2 by a multiple of units e, as predetermined by the number of actuated bails 22 ... 26. The operation to effect a carriage escapement corresponding to two units e the bail 22 is raised by the associated type key (not shown) so as to rock the release members 11 1 , 11 2 of pawls 4 1 , 4 2 upwardly into a locking engagement with a detent bail 31 to cause the pawls 4 1 , 4 2 to be disengaged from the gap between teeth 3<SP>111</SP> and 3<SP>11</SP>. Pawls 4 1 , 4 2 are then pulled by their springs 8 1 , 8 2 in the back-spacing direction, whilst the pawl 4 3 which is still in engagement with the tooth gap between teeth 3<SP>111</SP> and 3<SP>11</SP> is displaced in the letter-spacing direction by the carriage until the edge 6<SP>1</SP> 3 in its slot 6 3 , Fig. 4, abuts a common rod 7 on which all the pawls are mounted pivotally and slidably. Meanwhile the pawls 4 1 , 4 2 , as they are being displaced by their springs 8 1 , 8 2 , slide of the noses 16 1 , 16 2 on the right hand side of the release members 11a, 1 11a 2 and engage the next tooth gap disposed between teeth 3<SP>11</SP> and 3<SP>1</SP>, whereby the edges 6<SP>1</SP> 1 and 6<SP>1</SP> 2 of slots 6 1 and 6 2 , Fig. 4b, are spaced from the pin 7 by one and two units e, respectively.
