Abstract
1,153,222. Fractional distillation. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 5 Jan., 1967 [7 Jan., 1966], No. 725/67. Heading BIB. Liquid mixtures are rectified in an apparatus comprising a heated perpendicular cylinder 1 surrounding a rotary fluted condenser tube 8 and rotary arms 12 with hinged wipers 11 which distribute the liquid mixture over the internal surface of the cylinder, the area of the external wall of condenser tube 8 being equal to the area of the internal surface of cylinder 1. The condensate is flung off the edges 16 of truncated cones 13. The lower end of the apparatus is connected to a boiler, e.g. a film evaporator. The upper end of the apparatus leads to a reflux condenser. Heating fluid is forced upwards through a jacket 4 surrounding cylinder 1, this jacket being provided with helical baffle plates 5. Cooling fluid is introduced through pipe 9 at the top of condenser tube 8, flows down the channel between displacement member 15 and the wall of tube 8, and is discharged through pipe 10. The rates of flow of the heating and cooling fluids are adjusted by governors so that the temperature-difference between these fluids and the films of liquid on the surface of cylinder 1 and of the condenser, respectively, is constant over the whole length of the apparatus. A condenser of star-shaped cross-section is described. Reference is made to the separation of dimethylphthalate and diethylphthalate.
