Abstract
1,152,884. Elastomeric V-belts. UNIROYAL Inc. 28 April, 1967 [20 May, 1966], No. 19716/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A V-belt comprises an endless elastomeric body, a wear-resistant fabric layer 11 covering at least the bottom 17 and sides 18, 19 of the body, and, between the body and the fabric, a layer 12 of rubber having physical and/or chemical properties different from those of the body elastomer. The body includes layers 13, 15 of elastomer with reinforcing cords 14 between them. The layer 12 may be a rubber which is electrically conductive, abrasion resistant, oil resistant or has good flexibility at low temperatures. The fabric is preferably a knitted nylon having a stretch of over 200% and over 100% in the transverse and longitudinal directions respectively. The belt is made by the method described in Specification 1,097,887. A belt carcass is built up on a collapsible cylindrical mandrel, with a layer of fabric (11), a layer of rubber (12) having the desired surface properties, a body layer (13), a layer (14) of helically wound reinforcing cord, and a body layer (15) (Fig. 2, not shown). The carcass is transferred to a forming drum (20) (Fig. 3, not shown) comprising inter-engaging rings (21) the axial spacing of which is adjustable. A tension pulley tensions the carcass to cause sharp circumferential peaks (24) on the rings (21) to penetrate the fabric covered surface slightly. Then the cords 14 are cut over the peaks to prepare for formation of a set of individual belts. The ring spacing is increased and a pressure band applied to the outer surface of the carcass to force the latter into the grooves of the drum (20). The fabric layer is cut, and the now separate belts cured.
