Abstract
1,152,321. Packaging-machines. JACOB, WHITE & CO. Ltd. 5 July, 1966 [12 July, 1965], No. 29441/65. Heading B8C. Collapsed cartons 1 are fed from a hopper 2 by means of suction cups 19 on a pivoted bar 16, under cam control, and partially erected with the aid of breaker bars 25, on transfer to endless chains 21 which deliver each carton, held in reverse parallelogram form by the bars 25, to endless chains 5 for folding and filling. The bar 16 forms part of a frame 13b and is pivotally connected by bars 15 to a bar 13a, the frame being vertically reciprocated by a member 13 sliding in rails 14, and controlled by a cam 10 acting on a follower 11 mounted on a member 12. The frame is movable horizontally by means of the engagement of a follower 17 on the bar 16 in a cam slot 18. A plate 20, mounted on the bar 16 intermediate the suckers, serves to bow the carton and allow air to enter into it, Fig. 2 (not shown). The frame is then driven down, withdrawing the carton from the hopper, the edge of the carton striking the rounded surface 25b of the member 25, and on being lowered further, the carton, still in contact with member 25, is brought to an erected position. The bar 16 is then forced to the right by the cam slot 18, pushing the leading edge of the box under member 25. The vacuum is then removed from the suckers and the frame withdraws, leaving the carton supported on chains 21 which carry flights 22. The gap A between member 25 and chains 21 being less than the height of the carton, the carton is retained erected, Fig. 4 (not shown). The carton is then conveyed by flights 22 on the chain until it reaches a step 25a in member 25. The distance B being greater than the height of the carton, the carton springs to its rectangular form and is retained fully erect by back flights 6 on chains 5, and front flights 7 on the other chain (not shown), which abut the carton and convey it to the carton handling machine. The chains 21 may be driven continuously or reciprocably. The cartons may be delivered in a stack other than vertical. Adjustments may be made to enable larger cartons to be erected.
