Abstract
1,152,289. Fluorescent discharge lamps. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Dec., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 55227/67. Heading H1D. A low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp includes within the envelope a small quantity of metal which can readily form an amalgam with mercury and is provided with a starting strip on the envelope. The metal is preferably indium but may be cadmium, thorium, gallium, or zinc and maintains the pressure at 4 to 10 x 10<SP>-3</SP> mm. The lamp may be coated internally with fluorescent material and have an external starting strip. The starting strip is connected to one end cap and may be connected by a resistance to an electrode or may be earthed through a contact provided in a closed lighting device in which the lamp is mounted. The lamp has a minimum ignition voltage lower than that of known tubes using either an amalgam filling alone or a starting strip alone, and this minimum occurs at an operating temperature intermediate between the operating temperatures at the minimum ignition voltages of these known tubes.
