Abstract
1,152,124. Cells for electrolysis of molten oxides. SWISS ALUMINIUM Ltd. May 15, 1967 [May 17, 1966; April 28, 1967], No.22462/67. Heading C7B. In a cell for the electrolysis of molten oxides, e.g. alumina in the production of aluminium, the anode is separated from the melt being electrolyzed by a layer of oxygen-ion-conducting material which is non-permeable to and resistant to the melt at the temperature of the electrolysis, so that oxygen ions may diffuse through the layer and be discharged at the anode with the formation of oxygen gas. The oxygen-ion-conducting material may be cupshaped, and positioned in the cell with its base extending beneath the surface of the melt, and this structure may contain a liquid anode, e.g. molten silver; a secondary electrolyte e.g. molten lead oxide, into which extends an anode Fig. 3 (not shown) or the inner surface may be coated with a porous material which forms the anode e.g. platinium black Fig .1 (not shown). Alternatively the anode may comprise a block of porous material the lower face being provided with a layer of ion permeable material contacting the surface of the melt, Fig. 2 (not shown). In cells having a plurality of bi-polar electrodes the anodic face of each electrode may be covered with oxygen-ionpermeable material, the cathodic part of the electrode being formed of a material which is resistant to the fused melt, Fig.4 (not shown). Cells may also be formed having a plurality of anodes depending into said melt, each being coated with oxygen-ion-conductive material, and provided with conforming cathodes e.g. depending into the melt about said anodes Fig. 6 (not shown) or formed by the base of the cell which is provided with elevated portions 24 which face the sides of the anodes 23, as shown, insulated channels 21 being provided within the base of the cell for withdrawal of aluminium 2 produced.
