Abstract

1,151,871. Cross-linked polymers; compositions therefrom. AMES RUBBER CORP. 17 May, 1966 [19 May, 1965], No. 21934/66. Headings C3P and C3R. Polymeric compounds suitable for the manufacture of golf balls comprise 100 parts by weight of cis 1,4-polybutadiene and up to 25 parts by weight of 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate and/or up to 50 parts by weight of a styrene/butadiene copolymer containing at least 60% by weight of styrene, cross-linked and cured with 0À5 to 4 parts by weight of a peroxide. Up to 30 parts by weight of natural rubber, natural balata, synthetic balata, neoprene, styrene/butadiene rubber or polyurethane rubber, and fillers such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and silica, may also be present, and the peroxide may be coated on an inert particulate carrier such as calcium carbonate. Specified peroxides are dicumyl peroxide, 2,5-bis-(t.- butylperoxy) - 2,5 - dimethylhexane, isopropyl percarbonate, caprylyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, t.-butylperoxy isopropyl carbonate, t. - butyl hydroperoxide, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide, di-t.-butyl peroxide and cumene hydroperoxide. In examples golf balls are made from compositions comprising cis-1,4-polybutadiene, 2,5-bis-(t.-butyl peroxy)-2,5-dimethyl hexane, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, silica, octylated diphenylamine and stearic acid together with (12) a styrene/ butadiene copolymer, (1 to 11) styrene/butadiene copolymers and 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate, and (13 to 16) styrene/butadiene copolymers, 1,3-butylene glycol dimethacrylate and polyurethane rubbers.
