[Also in Division F2] In an hydraulic drive for a milling machine spindle 31, including an electric motor 11 driving a fixed displacement pump 10 to supply pressure fluid via a line 16 and a reversing valve 17 to an hydraulic motor 25 connected to the spindle 31 by gearing 33, a valve 35 regulates a by-pass flow round the motor 25 in accordance with line 16 pressure to maintain constant motor speed under varying load. The valve gives maximum by-pass flow when the motor is unloaded, and as the motor is loaded, and the pressure in line 16 rises, the bypass flow is reduced to make up for increasing slip in the pump and motor. There is zero bypass at maximum load.
