Abstract
1,151,596. Cable covering. BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP. 26 May, 1966 [27 May, 1965; 15 April, 1966], No. 23637/66. Heading D1T. A coating for a structural cable comprises an inner-layer of glass fibre matting 23 surrounding the cable, and outer layer of woven reinforcement 27 surrounding the inner layer and in contact therewith and an acrylic resin impregnating the inner and outer layers and bonding them together. The strands 13 of the cable can be covered with resilient plastic filler strips 18, e.g. of polyethylene, methyl methacrylate or P.T.F.E. which can be lap-jointed butt jointed and the gaps 19 filled with plastic material. Strips 18 can be covered fibre glass adhesive tape and a spiral-wrapped plastic strip 20, e.g. of nylon or polyethylene. This can be covered with further fibre glass adhesive tape. Strands 13 and 15 may all be the same size and strips 18 may cover more than one strand. The cable is made by applying liquid acryclic resin to impregnate fibreglass matting on the cable, wrapping with a woven reinforcement and applying coating over the woven reinforcement and allowing the resin to cure. The liquid acrylic resin and fibre glass matting can be applied sequentially or simultaneously. The acrylic resin, e.g. methylmethacrylate or ethylacrylate or acrylic copolymers can contain fillers and pigments. A second acrylic layer 25 can be applied to the outer surface of impregnated mat 23. The woven reinforcement 27, preferably also of glass fibre, is applied over layer 25, e.g. by spiral winding using a 50% overlap. A final acrylic layer 28 can be applied over the woven layer 27. The acrylic resin layers can be cured separately or simultaneously with or without heating. An outer layer 31 containing sand and acrylic resin can be applied. Plastic layers 18 and 21 can be omitted and the acrylic resin 21 applied directly to the strands 13, 15 and enter the interstices between them.
