Abstract
1,151,243. Controlling reheating furnace. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 25 Oct., 1966 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 47777/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division G3] In a furnace for reheating metal billets for rolling, the speed of travel and temperature of the billets passing through the furnace are sensed and the conveyer for the billets and the heating of the furnace are controlled by a computer in accordance with sensed values and predetermined data fed to the computer. Billets, which may come direct from a continuous caster, or from a slab yard, are passed in turn through a fuel-fired furnace and an induction furnace. The furnaces are each divided into zones, and the fuel and air or electricity supply to each zone, and the drives RD to the roller conveyers are controlled through a computer C which is fed with cards representing the size, origin, starting temperature and desired finished temperature of each billet. The system provides for billets from the slab yard and caster being fed irregularly, and for holding slabs within the furnace during a delay.
