Abstract
1,151,130. Joint-making packing; pipe Joints. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-AMOUSSON. 8 Dec., 1967 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 55973/67. Headings F2B and F2G. An elastomeric sealing ring R for a spigot and socket pipe joint comprises a hooking portion 1 integral with a sealing portion 2, the hooking portion having a cylindrical inner face 8, a nose 5 with a curved upper profile nm and a straight lower profile np substantially normal to the ring axis X-X and adjoining an annular recess 6 of trapezium section pqrs, one side pq being an extension of the profile np and the other rs being frustoconical with a semi-angle x at the apex of about 30 degrees, the sealing portion terminating in two lips 3, 4 and having a cylindrical outer face 7 and a frustoconical inner face 9. The material of the hook portion may be harder than that of the sealing portion. In use, between a pipe T 1 and a pipe T 2 having a socket 14 formed at its end with an internal flange 16 having a profile (p, q, r, s, Fig. 2) similar to that of the recess 6, the ring is first mounted on the socket 14 with the nose 5 abutting the end face 17 of the socket and the recess 6 engaged by the flange 16 and the pipe T 1 is then inserted in the ring, the diameter of the face 8 being greater than the outside diameter of the pipe T 1 so that only the sealing portion 2 is compressed between the two pipes. The end of the pipe T 1 may be tapered to facilitate assembly.
