Abstract

1,150,001. Opening containers. H. J. HEINZ CO. Ltd. 25 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 18489/66. Heading B8D. Cans having a peripheral outjutting seam in which lid and body are rolled together are opened in an hydraulic press, the lower part of which is formed by members 10-12 surrounding the can, a plunger 27 carried on a spindle 25 being movable downwards to cause the can seam to unroll. As the plunger 27 engages the end wall of the can placed within the members 10, 11, the can seam is forced against the upper surface 24 of parts 22, 23 of a split ring secured in the members 10, 11, thereby uncurling the seam. On rising, the plunger 27 retains the can end until a plate 32 integral with pins 31 is caused to push it off the plunger due to contact between a head 33 with a fixed member 26. The member 10 is secured to the member 12 which is fixed and the member 11 is openable on a hinge to insert the can. The split ring surface 24 may undulate, Figs. 5-7 (not shown). In a further modification, Figs. 8-11 (not shown), the members 10, 11 partially open the can end, the stroke of the spindle 25 being limited. The members 10, 11 are then replaced by further members (39, 40) having a frusto-conical surface (42) on which the partially opened seam rests. The plunger (27) continues its descent until the seam is loose, then retracts carrying the can end.
