Abstract

1,149,692. Making sockets. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Nov., 1966 [15 Nov., 1965; 24 March, 1966], No. 51097/66. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H2] A socket for an electric plug is made by deforming a middle section of a cylindrical tube to form plug engaging strips 3a, 3b, 3c joined by corners which are cut out to form slots 4a, 4b, 4c which separate the strips. The slots 4a, 4b, 4c are preferably parallel to the axis of the tube but may have a slight inclination to the axis. The tube is deformed by external pressure, for example, by punches (15a), (15b), (15c), Fig. 4 (not shown). The slots 4a, 4b, 4c do not extend along the whole deformed section in order to provide projections 6b which engage a step 17 in the holder 7. The other end section is outwardly flanged to secure the socket in the holder. In an alternative embodiment of the socket for flat-faced plugs, Figs. 10-13 (not shown), the tube is deformed in its middle section to form two strips (13d), (13e). The corners between the strips are cut away to provide slots (4d), (4e) and the strips may have a convex region (d), (e) to provide resilient engagement with the plug. This socket has projections (6e), (6d) to hold the socket in a holder (7). The same type of socket may be adapted for round plugs, Figs. 14-17 (not shown), by providing an inwardly directed groove (3f), (3g) on each strip. The end of the socket remote from the projections may be held resiliently in the holder by making a portion of the end non- circular (23a), Fig. 18 (not shown).
