Abstract

1,149,464. Sheet forming. W. G. HELLER. 29 Aug., 1967 [2 Sept.. 1966], No. 39409/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B8] A carton blank comprises a base sheet having an opening formed in at least one panel, and a sheet of thermoplastic material covering the opening and so shaped as to extend laterally beyond the plane of the base sheet. The thermoplastic bubble 80, 81 may be transparent or opaque and shaped, e.g. as a Christmas tree, Father Christmas face, ears, noses, a bottle or a pouring spout. The container may have more than one bubble which nest when the container is collapsed, and may be forced to an alternative position when erected as at 81, Fig. 8. The blanks may be formed on an apparatus comprising base sheet reel 14, cutting dies.18, 19, plastics sheet supply roll 21, cut-off rolls 22 and applicator 24, which may include a heater 30 if the plastics is to be heat-sealed to the base sheet, or an adhesive applicator. The component sheet is then passed over a large diameter roll 32 having mould cavities 33, the plastics is softened by heater 50 and moulded by the application of vacuum through an arbor 37. The individual blanks are then cut from the web by cutters 52, 53.
