1,148,795. Solids/liquid gravity separator. Wet separation. Agitating liquids. JONES & ATTWOOD Ltd. 5 June, 1967 [18 Nov., 19661, No. 25814/67. Headings B1C, BID and B2H. A degritting installation suitable for separating grit and sand from organic material and water comprises a tank 1, a raw water inlet 5, a water/organic material outlet 7, a grit or sand collecting pit 3, a pump for removing grit or sand from pit 3 comprising a suction tube 8 and a pipe 9 feeding compressed air, and a mixing device comprising paddles 14 carried on a rotatable hollow shaft 13 mounted concentrically on tube 8 such that the lower ends of paddles 14 are disposed below the lowest part of outlet 7 when the mixing device is stationary. The cross-sectional area of each paddle 14 may decrease towards the lower end of the paddle. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, means 25 may be a chain, an elastic blade, a cable or a bar, to enable the blades 14 to extend rearwardly with respect to the direction of rotation. The mixing device causes the organic material to remain in suspension.
