Abstract
1,148,410. Hydro-pneumatic suspension units. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. 21 Oct., 1966 [10 Nov., 1965], No. 47438/66. Heading F2S. In a hydro-pneumatic suspension system for a vehicle comprising a piston 5, having, e.g. a pair of conventional split rings 6 and which works in a cylinder 2 fed e.g. with oil through a pipe 3 and having e.g. a pipe 4 for returning leakage oil to a reservoir, not shown, the piston is provided with a complementary elastic ring 7 which is capable of ensuring a perfect fluid tightness when the vehicle is stationary while permitting leakage of oil when the piston is reciprocated in the cylinder to provide lubrication and lower frictional resistance, the ring 7, made e.g. of rubber or suitable plastics material, having a slightly greater diameter than the cylinder bore, and being received, with a certain axial play, in a groove 8 and leaving an annular space 14 between the inner periphery of the ring 7 and the bottom of the groove 8. In this manner, on an initial upward movement of the piston 5, e.g. when the vehicle is stationary, oil leaks past the rings 6 to fill up the space 14 in the groove 8 and increase the pressure therein the ring 7 being strongly urged radially against the cylinder wall with a force which is greater than the force which urges the lower face 11 of the ring into sealing engagement with the lower face 12 of the groove 8. When the vehicle is in motion each downward stroke of the piston 5 causes the piston to move downwards relative to the ring 7 so that oil can leak from the groove space 14 past a passage 13, between the lower faces 11, 12 respectively of the ring 7 and the groove face 12, and into the normal clearance space between the piston and cylinder. In a modification, Fig. 3, not shown, the ring (7) is constantly urged toward the groove face (12) by a metal spring (16). The spring (16) may be replaced by a resilient plastics ring having radial passages to permit ingress of oil into the groove space 14. This spring may be integral with the body of the ring 7.
