Abstract

1,148,194. Electron beam apparatus; spark gaps. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 9 Sept., 1966 [16 Sept., 1965], No. 40433/66. Heading H1D. A vacuum spark gap between electrodes 12, 13, between which is applied a voltage slightly lower than the breakdown valve, is triggered by an electron beam 11 formed between the electrodes. Part of the beam 2 from a laser 1 is reflected by a glass plate 3 through lenses 5, 6 on to a photo-cathode 7 constituting one of the walls of a vacuum enclosure 8. Electrons emitted by the photo-cathode 7 are focused by electrodes 9, 10 to a point between electrodes 12 and 13. Anode 12 is connected through a coaxial line 14, 15 and a resistor 16 to a H.T. generator 17. Cathode 13 is connected to a load circuit 19. Pulses from the circuit 19 may be used to release the shutter of an electronic camera for photographing plasma bursts generated by the impact on a target of the non- reflected portion 20 of the laser beam.
