A gas-liquid contact apparatus has helical packing elements 6 extending between supporting frames 1, the ends of the packing elements being held in aligned openings in the frames by sleeves 2 fitted over the ends and engaging in the openings of the frames. The sleeves are frustoconical and have flanges at their wider ends. Projections are preferably provided in the inner wall of the sleeve to engage with the end portions of the packing elements and the wider end may have a stop member secured thereto. The sleeves may be of plastics material and formed as two half-sleeves interconnected at their wider ends by flexible strips of material.
