Abstract

1,146,582. Polymerizing a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. STYRENE COPOLYMERS Ltd. 20 Sept., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45252/66. Headings C3P and C3R. A copolymer is produced by polymerizing in solution a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomers of which one or more is an acid which contains a free carboxyl group and another or others of which is an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid in the presence of a polymerization initiator and a mercapto-alkanol, the amounts of the acid and mercapto-alkanol being such that the copolymer has an acid value of 25-30 mgm. KOH/gm. copolymer and a hydroxyl value of 20-40 mgm. KOH/gm. copolymer. In the example a mixture of styrene, itaconic acid, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate was polymerized in a mixture of xylene and n-butanol with 2-mercapto-ethanol and cumene hydroperoxide: the copolymer solution was mixed with a butylated melamineformaldehyde resin to form a coating composition.
