Abstract

1,146,169. Pipe coupling sleeve. HEPWORTH IRON CO. Ltd. 1 Dec., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 53989/66. Heading B5A. [Also in Division F2] A method of forming a slightly resilient synthetic plastics, e.g. polypropylene, pipe coupling sleeve 1 with an integral, internally flared lip at one or each end, consists in injection moulding a cylindrical part 5 with a frustoconical portion 3 at one or each end and with a reduced thickness, e.g. constituted by a groove 4, at the junction of the part 5 and the or each part 3, and then turning the or each part 3 inwardly past the dead-centre position for the or each part 3 to spring to equilibrium positions flared inwardly from the end or ends then constituted by the reduced thickness at the junction or junctions. One end of the sleeve may be formed with an integral lip 2 and the sleeve may be provided with an internal flange or projections at the mid-length thereof. A sleeve having a lip at one end only may have the other end sealed or shrunk on to a plainended clayware or synthetic plastics pipe. The core parts of the mould each form one half of the inside of the cylindrical part 5 and the inside of the frusto-conical part or parts 3 and together form an internal flange or projections mid-length of the sleeve, being withdrawn through their respective ends, the parts 3 being distended.
