Abstract
1,146,157. Phosphorus-containing polyamide stabilizers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 6 June, 1966, No. 25113/66. Heading C3R. Suitable filaments of linear polyamides are produced by preparing the polymer by melt polymerization at least partly in the presence of a dissolved organic phosphinate, incorporating 0À0002-0À05% of manganous hypophosphite into the polymer and extruding it in molten form through an orifice. The phosphinate is of formula: where either R is alkyl, including cycloalkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl or aralkenyl, optionally substituted with hydroxyl, carboxyl, carboxylic ester, amino or halo groups and X isanyoftheradicals specified for R, alkyl substituted ammonium or a metal or R and X together represent an alkylene radical which with the phosphorus atom forms a ring. In either case n is 1 except when X is a metal of valency greater than 1. However use in the present invention of the phosphinate disclosed in Specification 902,906 is disclaimed. The weight of phosphinate used is 2-7 times that of hypophosphite. Polyamides specified include polyhexamethylene adipamide preferred in the examples by polymerization of hexamethylene diammonium adipate in the presence of acetic acid. Phosphimates specified are barium phenyl phosphinate, barium- 2,5 - dimethylphenylphosphinate, tetramethylammonium phenylphosphinate and hexamethylene diammonium phenylphosphinate. They may be added before or during polymerization. The hypophosphite may be added at any stage prior to extrusion. 0À02-5% of a delustrant, e.g. TiO 2 , may also be added.
