1,146,130. Detecting leaks in pipes acoustically. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Nov.6, 1967, No. 50316/67. Heading G1S. Apparatus for detecting and indicating leaks in a pipe-line which apparatus can be transported through the pipe-line comprises equipment for the observation, amplification, selection and recording of ultrasonic signals in such a way that ultrasonic signals arising from a leak can appear on a recorder chart in a recognized form and as a function of either the distance covered or a quantity such as time related thereto and a pressure sensitive element capable of reacting to the pressure in the pipe-line, the signal of which can be used for recording pressure indications as a function of distance or time as the apparatus is transported through the pipe-line, and/or for actuating a switch device by which the said equipment can be partly or entirely switched on or off. It is sufficient for the pressure sensitive element to record whether the pressure is above or below a specific set value, for which a bi-stable element such as a spring- loaded diaphragm may be used. When the pressure drops below the set value, the apparatus is not reliable for detecting leaks and hence the diaphragm operates a micro-switch to switch off the recording device of the apparatus.
