Abstract

1,145,834. Injection moulding machines. CHURCHILL INSTRUMENT CO. Ltd. 23 May, 1966 [4 June, 1965], No. 23893/65. Heading B5A. [Also in Division B3] A clamping press for an injection mould 17 is adjustable to accommodate moulds of different sizes. In the example shown the mould 17 is clamped between an intermediate platen 6 and a floating plate 14 carried by a fixed platen 2, by means of a toggle 7 operated by a ram 8. The toggle 7 and ram 8 are pivoted to a platen 4 whose position is adjustable according to the size of mould used by drive means 5 including an electric motor. The adjustment process comprises the following steps: (i) motor 9 moves thrust assembly 3 to the left until a switch 18 is actuated, (ii) switch 18 stops motor 9 and ram 8 extends toggle 7, (iii) motor 9 moves assembly 3 to the right until plate 14 actuates a switch 16 to stop the motor and cause ram 8 to retract toggle 7, (iv) when a limit switch 19 is tripped motor 9 moves platen 4 through a predetermined strain distance. When this position is reached motor 9 is automatically de-energized and fixes the platen 4 at the required distance so that when (v) ram 8 is automatically actuated the toggle 7 is re-extended and the mould clamped under the required locking force. Modifications.-In place of the switch 16 alternative sensing means may be used, e.g. (i) an optical beam device passing between the plates 2, 14, (ii) a device sensitive to current variation in the motor 9 or (iii) if the electrical drive 5 is replaced by an hydraulic motor, a device responsive to pressure variations in the hydraulic motor. In place of the toggle 7, a cam or screw arrangement may be used.
