Abstract

1,145,826. Boring heads. BIRFIELD ENG. Ltd. 31 May, 1966 [5 July, 1965], No. 28440/65. Heading B3C. A rotary boring head for profiling bores, comprises a tool slide 5, slidable in ways 4 in a body 1, a cam sleeve 9 slidable on the body, and a beam 27 rockable about a ball pivot 36, and connected by balls 22, 29 to a cam 17 on the sleeve, and to slide 5. Tool slide 5 is urged to the right, Fig. 1, by springs 7. Sleeve 9 is keyed to body 1 by cam 17, carries a friction collar 14 backed by an 0-ring 16, and has a stop ring 40 screwed thereto. In operation, with sleeve 9 in its lowermost position, and ball 22 on the upper flat surface 41 of cam 17, the head is rotated, and fed towards the work by a drilling machine spindle, to which it is attached. A cylindrical bore portion is produced in the workpiece until stop 40 engages a stop on the machine table. Sleeve 9 is now held against axial movement, ball 22 moves over portion 42 of the cam, and tool slide 5 is moved radially, due to the rocking of beam 27, to thus reproduce the shape of cam 17 in the bore.
