Abstract

1,145,556. Ester waxes. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 28 Oct., 1966 [30 Oct., 1965], No. 48391/66. Heading C2C. Ester waxes are prepared by reacting a glycidyl ester of a saturated aliphatic carboxylic acid (16-30 C) with a monocarboxylic acid (7-24C) and/or a polycarboxylic acid (2-12 C) and 2 to 6 carboxyl groups. The esters contain the structural unit in which R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical (15-29 C) and R<SP>1</SP> an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical (6-23 C), which may be substituted by a carboxyl group which may be esterified. Glycidyl esters of stearic and behenic acids are preferred and carboxylic acids may be palmitic, stearic, behenic, benzoic, toluic, maleic, adipic, sebacic, phthalic, terephthalic, pyromellitic, mellitic and benzene pentacarboxylic acids. Conventional catalysts are used and examples describe the preparation of waxes from octadecylglycidyl ester and stearic, sebacic, and cyclohexanone tetrapropionic acids.
