Abstract

1,144,871. Display devices. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 17 Feb., 1967 [24 Feb., 1966], No. 8161/66. Heading G5C. A display device, suitable for displaying monogrammic symbols, comprises two light polarizing means 2, 3 (Fig. 1, not shown) having their planes of transmission at right angles to each other, and positioned between them a further light polarizing means 4 which responds to an applied electromagnetic or electrostatic field by altering the angle of polarization of light passing through it. Means 4 suitably consists of a matrix of elements from which several may be selected at any one time to produce the desired monogrammic symbol. Such elements, which are desirably mounted on electrically conductive glass, may consist of Z-cut crystals of ammonium or potassium dihydrogen phosphate, or gadolinium or yttrium iron garnet; of these four materials, the first three are responsive to electrostatic and the last two to electromagnetic fields.
