Abstract

1,143,258. Pigmented polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Oct., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 50214/66. Heading C3R. Pigmented high M.W. linear polyamides are prepared by condensing one or more monomers selected from: a diammonium salt of a diamine NH 2 -X-NH 2 with a dibasic acid HOOC-YCOOH or an amino acid NH 2 -Z-COOH. X, Y and Z denote methylene chains, X and Y together contain at least 6 methylene groups and Z at least 3. The methylene chains may be interrupted by 0, 1 or 2 meta or para-phenylene groups and may also bear alkyl or aryl substituents and may optionally contain -O- links, providing the groups -O-O-, -O-CH 2 -N- and -O-CH 2 -CH 2 -CO- are absent. An aq. soln. of the said monomer or monomers is pumped through an elongated reaction zone heated to polymerization temperatures in which the reaction mass flows in two phases from an initial pressure at the inlet of at least 14 atmospheres to a pressure of not more than 1 atmosphere at the outlet. At a point in the reaction zone at which the temperature of the reaction mass is not more than 5‹ C. below the temperature of the vessel walls and the pressure is at least 7 atmospheres greater than that at the outlet, a dispersion (preferably aqueous) of pigment, e.g. TiO 2 or carbon black, is introduced into the reaction mixture and polymerization is completed. Examples of suitable polyamide forming monomers are: hexamethylene diamine with adipic acid, sebacic acid, suberic acid, terephthalic acid or isophthalic acid; m-xylylene diamine and adipic acid; dodecamethylene diamine or nonomethylene diamine with terephthalic acid; #-aminocaproic acid; and #-aminoundecanoic acid. The resultant polyamines are suitable for the fabrication of films, filaments and ribbons. In a typical example a polyamide of hexamethylene diammonium adipate is pigmented with TiO 2 at a reaction temperature of 290‹ C. and using an initial pressure of 23 atmospheres. The reaction zone in the form of a steel coil is 273 metres in length.
