Abstract

1,143,162. Selective printers. BORG-WARNER CORP. 14 June, 1966 [12 July, 1965], No. 26447/66. Heading B6F. Electrostatic screen printers; fixed web guides. In an electrostatic printer in which clouds of ions are displaced towards a dielectric web 10 through symbol-denoting apertures 18 in an endless screen travelling across the printing line, the screen is maintained in accurate spaced relationship with the web 10 by means of an air bearing. The air bearing is attached to the electrode blocks 16 and comprises a support plate 32, Fig. 3, to which are attached upper and lower plates 40, 44, clamp plates 42, 45 and spacer shim plates 41, 46 each of five thou. thickness. The lead-in to the slot is chamfered, Fig. 4, not shown, and the stencil, which is formed of stainless steel and of three thou. thickness, draws in a cushion of air on each side of it as it moves across the electrodes 16 and is constantly spaced from the web 10. In a modification the stencil guide plates may have air spaces to which air is added under pressure, Fig. 5, not shown. The stencil, the stencil drive pulleys and the guide means may be wholly enclosed and fed with filtered air to obviate blockage of the apertures 18 in the stencil by dust. The pulleys 21, 22 driving the stencil are curved in shape and this is formed by three flat areas 90, 91, 92, see Fig. 8. One pulley is spring tensioned to keep the stencil tight. Web tensioning, platen construction.-Flutter of the web 10 is obviated by reducing air pressure at the printing position by means of a pipe 19 coupled to a bore in a line-length anvil or platen 13.
