Abstract

1,142,172. Percussive drills. P. SNOWDEN. 9 June, 1967 [9 June, 1966], No. 25680/66. Heading B4C. [Also in Division F1] In an impact or vibratory device such as a rock drill, road hammer or pile driver wherein a piston 2 is reciprocated in seals 3, 4, 5 by hydraulic pressure pulses supplied to a chamber 7 to act on at least one face 6 of the piston 2 against the spring action of liquid acting on at least one opposed face 9 of the piston disposed in a liquid filled chamber 11, leakage from the chamber 11 is replenished from the chamber 7 through a by-pass 12 containing a non-return valve 13. Leakage from the chamber 11 which passes the seal 5, resiliently supported in a cushion 14, enters a drain chamber 15 connected to a reservoir. If the piston (18) has a plurality of pressure faces (24-26), Fig. 2 (not shown), the faces acted upon by the pulsating supply may be disposed in separate chambers or a common chamber (28), and the faces acted upon by spring liquid may also be disposed in separate chambers (30, 31) or a common chamber, and each chamber is provided with a separate bypass. The piston (18) has a shank (19g), and both are provided with an axial hole through which slidably passes a pipe (36) having a hole (37) through which flushing fluid flows to the percussion bit.
