Abstract

1,141,943. Emulsifiable ethylene polymers. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 9 Jan., 1967 [10 Jan., 1966], No. 1106/67. Heading C3P. Emulsifiable modified polyethylenes are prepared by reacting undegraded polyethylene having an inherent viscosity of not more than 0À5 with an unsaturated polycarboxy compound at at least 200‹ C. in an inert atmosphere. The polyethylene may be crystallizable polyethylenes. The polycarboxy compound may be an acid, anhydride or ester, e.g. maleic acid, maleic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, aconitic anhydride, itaconic anhydride, dimethyl maleate, dimethyl fumarate, methyl ethyl maleate, dibutyl maleate and dipropyl maleate; or may be formed in situ from a saturated compound, e.g. citric acid. The products may be used as adhesives or emulsified to give floor polishing and textile-treating compositions. Examples describe the reaction of low molecular weight polyethylenes with (1) maleic anhydride and (2) citraconic anhydride and aconitic acid; and emulsification of the products with (3) a nonylphenol/ethylene oxide condensate and (4) oleic acid and 2-amino-2-methylpropanol, the emulsion (4) being blended with acrylic interpolymer and maleic modified rosin emulsions. The products are useful as textile treating agents and floor polishes.
