Plant-parasitic nematodes in soil are inactivated by dispersing in the soil a 4-halo-pyridine or an acid addition salt thereof or a 4-halopyridine-N-oxide, above or in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent or carrier. The active substance may be added to the soil as a solution in water or mineral oil, optionally containing a lower aliphatic alcohol as watermiscible solvent. The active substance may also be employed in admixture with solid granular carriers which may be mineral porous granules (e.g. attaclay or pumice), mineral non- porous granules (e.g. sand or ground marl) or granules of organic materials (e.g. coffee grounds or granular particles or stems of tobacco leaves). Alternatively the active substance may be employed in the form of emulsions, water-miscible oils, pastes, wettable powders, water-soluble powders, dusts or aerosols. The active substance may also be used mixed with other pesticidal materials such as soil fungicides (e.g. chloropicrim, tetramethylthiuramdisulphide, pentachloronitrobenzene, zineb; moneb, 8 - hydroxyquinoline, organic tin and mercury compounds, particularly triphenyl tin hydroxide or the acetate or butyrate thereof, or the sodium salt of monomethyl-dithiocarbamic acid); soil insecticides (e.g. dieldrin, endrin, toxaphene or hexachlorocyclohexane) and other nematicides, e.g. a mixture of 1,2 - dichloropropane and 1,3-dichloropropene, sodium N - methyl - dithiocarbamate or 1,2 - dibromo - -3 - chloropropane). In the examples, the active substance employed is 4 - chloro - pyridine - N - oxide or the hydrochloride salt of 4 - chloro - pyridine or of 4 - bromo - pyridine.
