Abstract

1,141,550. Railway vehicle bogies. ROCKWELL MFG. CO. 26 April, 1967, No. 19228/67. Heading B7L. A railway vehicle bogie comprises a pair of sub-assemblies 14, 16 each being formed of a side frame 22, 24 with rigidly fixed transoms 26, 28 mounted on posts 56, the sub-assemblies being connected by universal joints 18, 20 on posts 58, so that they can move relative to one another about diagonal axis 29. Axle bearing housings 54, 130 at the ends of the side frame resiliently mount taper roller bearings in which the axles are journalled. The universal joints 18, 20 comprise a spherical surface mounted on the end of the transom mounted within an internal concave surface fixed to post 58. A bolster is mounted on spring platforms 44 formed on the side frames. The spring assemblies 42 between the bolster and these platforms comprise inner and outer coil springs 166, 164 and a rubber spring 168. Vertical shock absorbers 200 and lateral shock absorbers (206), Fig. 1 (not shown) serve to additionally locate the bolster. Longitudinal and transverse movement of the bolster is prevented in excess by rubber snubbers (220), Fig. 1, and 230 respectively. The platforms 44 are displaced longitudinally with respect to one another towards or away from posts 58 according to whether the vertical line of action of the spring assemblies 42 is outboard or inboard respectively of the vertical lines of action of the wheel bearings.
