Abstract

1,141,527. Uses of luminescence. UNITED STATES RADIUM CORP. (EUROPE). 11 May, 1966 [12 May, 1965], No. 20820/66. Heading C4S. In combination with a device to be illuminated, at least one replaceable radio-active light source removably secured to said device comprises a protective housing 11, e.g. a metal channel, or a hollow plastic (e.g. polymethylmethacrylate) or glass tube (transparent or translucent); a hollow sealed glass element 10 (which may also be spherical for instance) embedded within said housing and containing a phosphor (e.g. ZnS, CdS, ZnCdS or CdWO 4 ) and a radio-active beta-ray emitting gas (e.g. T or Kr-85). The glass element may be embedded in transparent elastomeric potting material within the protective housing or the potting material may itself form the housing. Cushions 13 of a rapid curing elastomeric potting material assist location of element 10 in assembly. In Figs. 6 to 10 (not shown), one or two light sources with metal channel housings are incorporated in plastic signs, the light being directed transverse to, or against, the surface incorporating the legend. A single light source spanning a central reflective light barrier dividing the plastic body, may be used to illuminate legends on the two opposing surfaces. Applications to aircraft and space capsule control panels, life raft instruction indicators, and escape doors are instanced.
