Abstract

1,141,301. Settling tank. GEBR. STORK & CO.'S APPARATENFABRIEK N.V. 29 March, 1966 [2 April, 1965], No. 13889/66. Heading B1D. A settling tank, for purifying palm oil, comprises an outlet overflow 3, 5, shielded by perforate screen 6, for the oil, a discharge conduit 4, 8, 9 opening into a chamber 10, for water and lighter solids, and a crude oil inlet 11, 12, which is vertically adjustable so that its lower end is on or near the calculated level of the oil-water interface 13. The mouth 12 of the inlet is shielded by baffle 15 to direct oil radially, horizontally outwards, and baffle 15 can be shaken by rod 22. These arrangements ensure that light solids 21 are swept outwards on the interface 13 and do not interfere with separation. The tank has a valve-controlled discharge 18 for sand and a heater 16. Inlet 24 is for water, whereby the oil layer 7 may be wholly displaced through outlet 3 prior to cleaning the tank.
