Abstract

1,141,239. Pipe and rod couplings &c. C. B. MARETZO. 16 March, 1967, No. 12462/67. Heading F2G. [Also in Divisions B3 and F4] Heat exchangers, particularly condensers associated with steam turbines in large power plants, have tubes 12 tightly engaged in apertures 11 in a plate 10 with the outlet end of the tube terminating near one face of said plate, and are characterized by each tube 12 having located therewithin a tubular insert 18, the one end of the insert having an annularly outwardly flared lip 22 covering the one end of the tube and the other end thereof 21 of the insert being disposed beyond the other face of the plate 10, said insert being held securely in place in a tube by a weld 14 and by expanding a short cylindrical portion of the insert in the region from points 25 to 26, to firmly engage the inside of the tube. Preferably, before the insert is placed in position, the tube is also expanded in this region (viz. 15, 16 in Fig. 2), whereby a clearance space 23 is provided between the insert and the interior surface of the tube. This space (23) accommodates the expanded length 25, 26 of the insert which is thereby tightly and securely lodged in place and is effectively locked against axial displacement. The inserts 18 may preferably be formed of the same metal as the tubes 12 and the tube plate 10, for example in typical cases aluminiumbronze alloys may be used.
