Abstract
1,141,234. Fuses. BURNDY CORP. 27 Feb., 1967 [4 March, 1966], No. 9128/67. Heading H2G. A circuit interrupter responsive to, e.g. increase in ambient temperature comprises a body 10 and a fusible element (12) of conductive material having a known melting temperature disposed in a given position relative to the body, and a pair of external electrical circuit connection means 20, 22 forming a series electrical circuit through the fuse element, and absorbent means 18 in said body capable of absorbing the material of the fuse element in its molten state so as to withdraw all of the fuse element material from the given position when the element (12) has melted. The fuse element (12), (Fig. 1, not shown), which may be of indium or alloys including, for example bismuth, gallium, lead and indium, such as Rose's alloy or Wood's alloy, is enclosed in a bore 14 in a ceramic or dielectric collar 16 not wetted by the molten fuse material. Porous plugs 18 which may be made by sintering copper particles into an integral mass having dispersed "pores" or " voids " (Fig. 3, not shown) or by comprising a mass of conductive metal fibres, are mechanically and electrically secured to the fuse element, these plugs having pores of such a size as to absorb and retain the molten material of the fuse element by surface tension. Contact plates 20 with terminal portions 22 allow connection into an external circuit. Washers 24 of epoxy material may be used to seal the plates 20 in the body. Arcing is prevented by using a material of low vapour pressure, e.g. indium, for the fuse element.
