Abstract

1,141,069. Yarn packages. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 June,- 1967 [4 July, 1966], No. 29829/66. Heading B8M. [Also in Division D1] A polyamide yarn package consists of successive, parallel layers of coils of yarn wound on a former in a build having tapered end-portions, the hardness of the package decreasing from inside to outside thereof, and being substantially uniform as measured along the axial lengths of any of said layers, the mean value at the outside of a full package being not greater than 65 degrees on the Shore 'A' scale and at one third the total weight being not greater than 80 degrees on the said scale. The package is built up of straight helices in a long-to-short build. The yarn on withdrawal from the package has a low residual shrinkage and a low propensity to barrÚ. A process for producing the polyamide yarn package comprises drawing an undrawn polyamide yarn, heating to drawn yarn under relaxing conditions, and winding the yarn into a package on a ring-spindle wind-up, the speed of rotation of the traveller being substantially constant throughout the winding and the traverse stroke decreasing gradually in length from inside to the outside of the package. The traveller speed is maintained constant by a programmed reduction in the speed of rotation of the spindle. The yarn is preferably relaxed by contact with a hot plate. The traveller ring is disposed in a plane within Œ¢ degree of the perpendicular to the spindle. The residual shrinkage of the yarn on withdrawal from the package is preferably not greater than 8%.
