Abstract

114,046. White, G. March 26, 1917. Ploughs.-A one-way plough having a main frame 5 with an angularly disposed extension at each end carries upon the frame 5 itself, or upon an auxiliary frame disposed thereon, a centrally arranged engine 7 provided at each end with a fly-wheel 8 and clutch 9 so that a short shaft 11 carrying a worm 12 can be driven at either end of the engine. Each worm 12 is adapted to drive a cross shaft 15 to which sprocket wheels 17, driving chains 19 passing over sprocket wheels on the shafts of the driving wheels 20, 22, may be clutched. The driving wheels may be vertically adjusted independently of each other by pairs of vertical screws 23 connected to guided axle boxes 24. Each pair of screws is operated in unison by a hand-wheel 25, sprocket wheels 26 secured on the screws, and a chain 27 passing round the sprocket wheels. Each shaft 15 carries a pair of bevel-wheels 28, either of which may be put in mesh with a bevel-wheel 29 on the end of a longitudinal shaft 30 carrying a worm 31 driving a worm-wheel 32 on the shaft of a drum 34 around which the lifting and lowering chain 35 for a plough frame 36 is wound. A hand-wheel 38 is provided on the end of each shaft 30 to permit the plough frame to be raised and lowered by hand. Each plough frame can be horizontally adjusted relatively to the main frame by varying the position of pins passing through arms 49 connecting the plough frame to its pivot shaft 50 in a perforated bar 48 extending across the plough frame. The space between the furrows may be varied by adjusting the distance between the ploughs by means of screw-threaded bolts 47. Each pivot shaft 50 may be fitted in any pair of a series of vertically spaced holes 52 in the main frame. The plough is steered by steering-wheels 42 operated from hand-wheels 39 arranged close to the seats 13. The steering may be assisted by clutching or unclutching the land or the furrow driving wheel. One or both of the shafts 15 may carry a pulley 43 to drive other agricultural machinery. The engine may be started by a free-wheel gear 44 on the engine shaft 10 connected by a chain 45 to a sprocket hand-wheel 46.
