Abstract

1,140,001. Sewing machine attachment. MITE CORP. 10 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 35916/66. Heading D1G. An attachment for a sewing machine for enabling designs to be sewn comprises a work support given a oscillatory motion to provide a zig-zag stitch and a superimposed translatory motion to follow the design outline. The width of the stitch and the translatory motion are controlled by a pattern cam. The attachment is fixed to the presser bar once the foot has been removed. To provide the oscillatory motion a forked arm 18 engages the needle clamp of the needle bar and by means of a link 68 (see also fig. 16, not shown) racks a cam wheel 72. A pivoted follower 78 transmits a swinging motion to the work supporting frame 22 via linkage 92, 96, 100, 104. To vary the stitch width the pivot 90 of link 92 is moved along slot 130 in the arm 78 by means of a pattern cam follower (116) fixed to an arm 118 and engaging a side cam (114) on the pattern cam. The maximum stitch width may be set manually by moving the end of arm 100 along a slot 132 in arm 96, via knob 30. The pattern cam 26 is fed through the attachment by gears engaging teeth along its edges and driven via a ratchet wheel 158, and pawls pivoted on the underside of followers 78, (see also fig. 17, not shown). The gears may be driven manually, or the feed may be disengaged so that the pattern cam may be slid through the attachment. A follower (212, fig. 18, not shown) sliding in a top track of the cam transmits, via an arm (214) pivoted on link 104, a swinging lateral displacement to the work support. A follower (222, fig. 19, not shown) of a lever (224), moving in the bottomcam track moves a pin and slot connected linkage so that the work support is moved rectilinearly in a longitudinal direction. The usual feed dogs of the machine are rendered ineffective, and the pressure of the hold down finger 290 is relieved when the material is moved. An outline of the design may be clipped to the work support to locate the design accurately on the work.
