Abstract
1,139,389. Hydraulic transmissions. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 19 Oct., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 47638/67. Heading F2D. [Also in Division G3] A fluid transformer connected between a vehicle engine 71 and a hydraulic propulsion motor 72 comprises an reaction chamber 46 in hydraulic communication with rotatable primary and secondary hydraulic circuits which may be either of sinusoidal shape (Figs. 7-9, not shown) or of loop formation with the planes containing the loops arranged at right angles. The primary loop 48 is fed at 52 with fluid from an engine driven gear pump 70 and exhausted through annulus 62 to reservoir 73. Part of this flow passes via reaction chamber 46 to the secondary loop 48<SP>1</SP> and thence through motor 72. The proportion of the primary flow transferred to the secondary loop is determined by the speed at which the pair of loops is spun in bearings 16, 18 by electric motor 30 since the product of the primary and secondary circuit impedances measured across the reaction chamber is stated to be proportional to the square of the spin velocity. Motor 30 has a manual speed control 35 and an automatic speed control 36 which operates in response to the pressure sensed in motor delivery line 80 by a device 88.
