Abstract
1,138,651. Welding by pressure. H. VAN DER HORST. 19 Jan., 1966 [19 Jan., 1965], No. 2475/66. Heading B3R. A process for joining together metal layers, of which one layer 2 is provided with a layer 3 of explosive mixture, comprises positioning the layers at an angle with respect to one another and in line or point contact, and igniting the explosive mixture to cause the layer 2 to approach the other layer 1 and become joined to it, the angle between the layers before ignition of the explosive mixture increasing with the distance from the line or point of contact. As described, at least one layer, e.g. as shown the layer 2, is preferably in the shape of an arc and has linear contact with the other layer either at its edge or near the centre of at least one of the layers. Alternatively at least one of the layers forms part of a spherical surface having point contact with the other layer. In each case the ignition is effected from the line or point of contact by, e.g. an ignition device 4. To improve the contact between the layers before ignition a very thin piece of the material of one of the layers is provided between the layers.
