[Also in Division A5] Novel quinoline derivatives of the formula wherein, when X stands for an oxygen atom, R<SP>1</SP> stands for an alkyl or alkenyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> stands for an alkyl radical of at least 5 carbon atoms, or an aryloxyalkyl or aralkyl radical the aryl nucleus of either of which optionally bears one or more substituents selected from halogen atoms and alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio and nitro radicals, R<SP>3</SP> stands for a halogen atom or an alkoxy or acyloxy radical and R<SP>4</SP> stands for hydrogen or an alkyl, alkoxy, or alkenyloxy radical or wherein when X stands for a sulphur atom, R<SP>1</SP> stands for an alkyl or alkenyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> stands for an alkyl or benzyl radical, R<SP>3</SP> stands for an alkoxy or acyloxy radical and R<SP>4</SP> stands for hydrogen or an alkyl, alkoxy or alkylthio radical are obtained (a) wherein R<SP>3</SP> stands for a halogen atom by cyclization of a compound of the formula with a phosphorus oxyhalide or by the interaction of a hydroxyquinoline derivative of the formula with a halogenating agent; (b) wherein R<SP>3</SP> stands for an alkoxy radical by reacting the corresponding 4-halo compound with (c) wherein R<SP>3</SP> stands for an acyloxy radical by reacting the corresponding 4-hydroxy compound with an acylating agent.
