Abstract

1,138,091. Polyamide precursor solutions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 11 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 16443/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B2] A coating solution is made by forming a mixture in water of (a) an aromatic polycarboxylic acid having (i) two non-adjacent COOH groups, (ii) three COOH groups, two of which are adjacent, or (iii) two separate pairs of adjacent COOH groups; (b) m-phenylene diamine or a diamine where R is C 1-3 alkylene, CO, O or SO 2 ; and (c) a water-soluble tertiary amine or secondary monoamine, and allowing the mixture to interact at below 65‹ C. to form a homogeneous solution. On subsequent application of heat a polyamide, polyimide or polyamide-imide is formed. The solutions are stated to free from polymeric materials such as polyamide-acid. Specified amines (c) are pyridine, N-methyl or - ethyl morpholine, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-tetramethyl butanediamine, diethylamine and morpholine; specified acids (a) are benzophenonetetracarboxylic, isophthalic, trimellitic and pyromellitic. Various diamines (b) are mentioned and it is stated that up to 20% thereof may be replaced by an alkylene diamine. Conventional chain stoppers for the subsequently formed polymer may be included, e.g. monoamines or dicarboxy - lic acids, as may urea to assist solubility. The solutions may also be used for preparing fibres, and as impregnants and adhesives. The resulting polymers may be formulated with fillers, e.g. wood flour, diatomaceous earth, carbon, silica and abrasive grains such as silicon carbide and diamond grit.
