Abstract
1,137,581. Polyamide production. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Dec., 1966 [22 Feb., 1966], No. 7717/66. Heading C3R. [Also in Division D1] Polyamides of high M.W. and increased affinity for dyes are produced by interacting equimolar quantities of a diamine A and a dicarboxylic acid or a salt thereof in the presence of 0À1-10 mole per cent of a salt of an aliphatic diamine B and a hydrogen halide. The diamine A may be of formula where m = 2-12, e.g. hexamethylene diamine. The carboxyl groups of the dicarboxylic acid are separated by at least 2 carbon atoms. Acids specified include aliphatic acids, e.g. adipic acid, and iso- and terephthalic acids. The aliphatic diamine B may be one having 2-18 carbon atoms between the amino groups, e.g. hexamethylene diamine. Diamines A and B may be the same. Hydrogen halides specified are HCl, HBr and HI. The salt may contain 1 or 2 moles of hydrogen halide per mole of diamine. It may be added at any stage during the reaction, but preferably at the beginning, or may be prepared in situ from the diamine and an aqueous solution of the hydrogen halide. The reaction mixture may also contain TiO 2 and N,N<SP>1</SP>-bis-(3-aminopropyl). piperazine as a dyeing assistant. The reaction temperature may be 200-400‹ C. The hydrogen halide salt may be washed from the polymer when the latter is in chips or later when it has been made into fibres.
