Abstract

1,137,419. Forming bladed members by winding strand on to a jig. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 25 Nov., 1966 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 52938/66. Heading B8G. [Also in Division F1] A method of making a bladed member, such as a bladed wheel, comprises winding at least one strand 36, Fig. 1, of material under uniform tension on a jig 10 such that the material extends along reaches B, C, G etc., defining the desired blades; the material also being wound around the outer ends of the jig between said reaches, and in slots H near the inner ends of said reaches. The material may also be wound across the area bounded by the circle defined by the slots H. The winding is continued until sufficient layers of the material have been wound on the jig, the layers of material being then bound together while on the jig, and then removed from the jig. The material may be glass filaments impregnated with a curable resinous material such as thermo-setting epoxies, phenolics or the like. Boron coated tungsten filaments are quoted. The binder may be metallic. Sheet material, such as binder impregnated woven glass cloth, may be placed on the jig prior to winding strand material; on the surface of the wound strands prior to binding; between the layers of strands during the winding operation. Fig. 2 (not shown), shows a spider shaped pressure element that can be placed on the wound jig 10 and subjected to pressure against the windings thereon so that under heated conditions the strands are bound together. Fig.3 shows one embodiment of the finished product, removed from the jig, and in which the blades 24 extend between outer and inner shrouds 25, 26. The area within the inner shroud 26 can be filled with a foamable epoxy resin 28 which, when foamed and cured, serves to prevent extraneous gas flow through the hub area 27 formed by crisscrossed reaches of roving. The resin 28 also serves to prevent vibration of the reaches crossing the hub area. If the outer shroud 25 is not required it may be removed by trimming it from the ends of the blades 24.
