Abstract
1,136,552. Annealing wire. GEOFFROY. DELORE, and GODDERIDGE & CIE. 20 Dec., 1965 [18 Dec., 1964], No. 53971/65. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C7] In a method and apparatus for annealing metal wire by direct resistance heating the wire is advanced over a number of rotary electrodes so that it is in contact with each over a small arc. Movement of the wire is effected by an input capstan upstream of the electrodes and by the final electrode which has a pair of pulleys associated with it, the final electrode and pulleys and the other electrodes being driven from the input capstan. Adjustable means, such as a pair of pulleys at least one of which is movable in relation to its associated electrode, are provided for maintaining the wire in contact with the intermediate electrodes over a small arc. As illustrated, wire 1 enters by input capstan 2 and passes over electrodes 3, 6 and final electrode 10, the zone between electrodes 3 and 6 forming a heating zone and that between electrodes 6 and 10, in which the wire is maintained in a protective atmosphere in tube 16, forming an annealing zone. The wire is then cooled during its passage through tube 18 through which coolant is circulated by pump 20. On the shaft of capstan 2 is mounted a pulley 25 (Fig. 2) which through a speed selector 28 drives pulley 31 mounted on the shaft of electrode 10. The latter is geared to pulleys 11 and 12, pulley 12 having on its shaft a further pulley 42 (Fig. 4, not shown) over which runs a belt driving electrodes 3 and 6. These are provided with coolant by pump 20 and have associated with them pulleys 4, 5 and 7, 8 respectively, these pulleys being grooved so that the position of the wire on the electrode may be adjusted to avoid localized wear.
