Abstract

1,135,944. Cutting tools. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 7 Dec., 1965 [15 Dec., 1964], No. 51049/64. Headings B3B, B3C and B3K. In a cutting tool of the type having a holder 16 and a flat polygonal insert 6, the insert has opposed sides 6A, 6B and a plurality of edge faces each including at least one cutting edge 9 and is insertable in a recess in the holder having a base 22 and two inwardly inclined side walls 23 and 24 which co-operate with one of the sides and at least part of each of two edge faces when the insert is located in the recess. In the embodiment described the end portions 7 and 8 of each side face are inclined to one another so that one end portion forms an angle of less than 90 degrees with one of the sides and the other end portion forms an angle of less than 90 degrees with the other side of the insert. The seating recess for the insert has its side walls which co-operate with the insert inclined inwardly to overhang the respective edge face and which gives an area contact over one part of each edge face and line contact over the other part of each edge face. The cutting tool described may be used for turning, boring and milling.
