The invention relates to compounds of the formula in which X denotes chlorine or fluorine and Y denotes hydrogen, chlorine or fluorine, and to their preparation by reacting 1-cyanobutadiene-1,3 with a fluorolefine of the formula The fluorolefine may be diluted with an inert gas or with the reaction product and the cyanobutadiene may be used in solution in an inert solvent. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone or dipentene, may be included in the reaction mixture. Various methods of procedure are indicated, and apparatus is described. Examples are given of the reaction of 1-cyanobutadiene-1,3 with tetrafluoroethylene, trifluorochloroethylene and 1,1 -dichloro-2,2-difluoroethylene. Trifluoroethylene is another specified reagent.
